Sources and corrections
Dates, portraits, maps, and chronicles do not all carry the same weight. The captions and notes keep those differences visible.
Sources
Entries are based on modern scholarly histories and, where useful, chronicles, documents, inscriptions, coins, manuscripts, and museum records. A thin record stays thin. A disputed point stays disputed.
Confidence
Short labels such as traditional date, probable, and disputed appear when certainty matters to the reading. They describe the claim, not the importance of the year.
Images and maps
- Contemporary object
- A coin, seal, manuscript, building, or document from the period under discussion.
- Period manuscript
- A near-period image whose date and genre remain in the caption.
- Later depiction
- An artwork made well after its subject. It is not presented as a documentary likeness.
- Own-work map
- A map built from declared geography. Fluid borders and disputed sites remain uncertain.
- Reconstruction
- An interpretive image, labeled as such.
Corrections
A typo may be fixed quietly. A wrong person, date, quotation, causal claim, map, or image status gets a visible correction and an updated archive entry. Send a correction with sources to @TheOttomanYear on X ↗.
